Comme Michael J. Fox dans “Family Ties“, Tom Hanks débute sa carrière au générique d’un soap. “Bosom Buddies” décrit le quotidien de deux jeunes hommes qui, pour des raisons budgétaires, décident d’emménager dans un immeuble réservé aux femmes! Le générique de la série, composé par Billy Joel, incarne parfaitement le charme mélodique et graphique de Manhattan au début des années 1980.

Like Michael J. Fox in ‘Family Ties‘, Tom Hanks began his career in the credits of a tv soap. ‘Bosom Buddies‘ was the story of the everyday life of two young men who, for budgetary reasons, decide to move into a building reserved for women! The theme tune of the series, originaly composed by Billy Joel, perfectly embodied the melodic and graphic charm of Manhattan at the beginning of 1980s.

Les fidèles lecteurs du blog connaissent les noms de Haim Saban & Shuki Levy depuis le post que j’avais consacré, il y a quelque temps, à la bande originale des Mystérieuses Cités d’Or. Jean Chalopin le créateur de cette série à aussi fait appel à ce talentueux duo pour écrire les musiques de l’Inspecteur Gadget en 1983. Les synthés utilisés sont identiques mais les lignes mélodiques se font plus légères et moins sombres que sur les Cités d’Or. Fort de ce nouveau succès, cette géniale collaboration se prolongera sur bon nombre de production comme M.A.S.K, les Minipouss, Jayce et les Conquérants de la Lumière ou Les Maîtres de L’Univers.

The faithful readers of the blog will know the names of Haim Saban and Shuki Levy from the post i dedicated to them some time ago, featuring the soundtrack of The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Jean Chalopin, the creator of this series in also worked with this talented duet to composed the musical score of Inspector Gadget in 1983. The used the same synthesizers sounds but the lighter melodic lines make it less dark and melancholy than the work on The Mysterious Cities of Gold. This brilliant collaboration went on to produce many themes for 80′s TV shows, such as M.A.S.K, The Littles, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and even He-Man.

Producteur d’origine Slovène, Uroš Umek est un des pionniers de la scène électronique européenne. Dans les années 90, sa discographie impressionnante fera la part belle à bon nombre de maxis techno aussi efficaces que sur-vitaminés. Comme beaucoup à l’époque, il développera aussi des projets plus singuliers, comme la série Zeta Reticula, qu’il signera pour le label anglais Electrix Records. Sorti en l’an 2001, ce titre porte déjà les accents nostalgiques fondateurs de notre mouvement.

Producer of Slovenian origin Uroš Umek, is a pioneer of the European electronic scene. In the 90s, his huge discography had a good place in many techno EP so effective was his sound. As many in the period, he also developed more singular projects, as with the project Zeta Reticula, that he went on to sign with the English label Electrix Records. Released back in the year 2001, this title already carries the founding nostalgic accents of our movement.

Mamoru Oshii et Kenji Kawai font partie des plus remarquables associations de réalisateur-compositeur du siècle dernier. On retiendra leur collaboration pour Ghost in the Shell, bien sûr, mais aussi sur les adaptations du manga de Headgear : Patlabor. Le thème “Unnatural City”, extrait de la bande originale de Patlabor II (1993), caractérise la richesse de ce travail. A travers ces quelques notes vaporeuses, Kenji Kawai vient saisir et sublimer la richesse visuelle de ce techno thriller d’animation Japonais. Par ailleurs, Valerie vous donne rendez-vous vendredi soir au bar du Lieu Unique à Nantes pour un nouveau live de College, un mix des Outrunners et Maethelvin ainsi qu’un mystérieux invité!

Mamoru Oshii and Kenji Kawai are one of the most remarkable director/composer teams of the last century. Let’s of course note their collaboration on ‘Ghost in the Shell‘, but also on the adaptations of the manga work of Headgear‘s Patlabor. Après l’engouement suscité par Fear of Tigers et son génial premier album, c’est au tour de Johan Agebjörn (moitié de Sally Shapiro) de nous accompagner cette semaine. Vous l’aurez peut être remarqué, Noël approche et notre ami Suédois arrive avec un cadeau. Il signe en effet spécialement pour Valerie un très beau mix intitulé “Ocean of Love”. J’attire par ailleurs votre attention sur le très joli nouvel album “My Guilty Pleasure” de Sally Shapiro toujours disponible.

DMX Krew ou bien encore EDMX fait partie des artistes mythiques de la scène électronique anglaise de la fin des années 90. Producteur extrêmement prolifique il signera de nombreux maxis et albums, principalement sur le label Rephlex. L’extrait que j’ai choisi aujourd’hui est tiré de son album “We are dmx“, sorti en 1999, une composition naïve et mélodique soutenue par un vocoder (celui d’Aphex Twin himself pour l’anecdote) qui annonce une orientation plus pop que certains artistes électro de l’époque. Un nouveau chapitre fondateur de la musique électronique est en train de s’écrire, les lives et les Dj’s se déplacent peu à peu dans les salles de concerts… Par ailleurs, pour nos amis new yorkais n’oubliez pas d’aller applaudir Russ Chimes mais aussi Kapt10Kurt, VDRK and Bradley D (Flashmen) à Brooklyn samedi soir au Le Poisson Rouge!

DMX Krew (aka EDMX) is a part of mythical group of artists from the English electronic scene of late 90s. An extremely prolific producer, EDMX will produce numerous EP and albums, mainly on the label Rephlex. The track which I have chosen today is an extract from the album ” We are dmx “, released in 1999, a naive and melodic composition supported by a vocoder (the one from Aphex Twin himself for a bit of trivia) which flows in a more pop-based style than main the main electro artists of this period. Le post de cette semaine m’a été soufflé par Maethelvin qui a attiré mon attention sur le très bon générique du film “Les Super Flics de Miami“. Pour l’anecdote, ce thème énergique agrémenté de délicieuses trompettes synthétique a été signé par une obscure formation répondant au nom de “La Bionda Orchestra”. Après quelques recherches, je me suis aperçu que La Bionda était, en réalité, un projet disco formé dans les années 70 par deux frères Siciliens, Carmelo et Michelangelo La Bionda. A noter que le clip animé de leur titre, “I wanna Be your Lover“, est un petit bijou de science fiction 80′s.

Maethelvin drew my attention this week to the amazing credits music of the film “Miami Supercops“. A project answers to the name of “La Bionda Orchestra” who produced this energetic theme along with it’s delicious synthetic trumpets. After some research I noticed that La Bionda was infact a disco project formed in the 70s by two Sicilian brothers Carmelo and Michelangelo La Bionda. So check out the animated video clip of their track “I wanna Be your Lover” a small jewel in the crown of 80′s science fiction!

Tel pourrait être le décor d’un des épisodes de CHiPs, diffusée sur NBC entre 1977 et 1983. Le compositeur Alan Silvestri, plus connu pour ses nombreuses collaborations avec Robert Zemeckis, participera à la bande originale de la série et contribuera, ainsi, à son succès planétaire. La magie du thème que j’ai choisi pour ce post, “Disaster Squad”, tient dans l’extraordinaire ligne mélodique décrite par les cuivres de l’orchestre symphonique. Voilà de quoi enflammer nos mémoires autant que l’ont été les autoroutes de Californie par Jon Baker et Francis Poncherello, les deux héros de la série…

Such could be the set of one of the episodes of CHiPs, aired on NBC between 1977 and 1983. The composer Alan Silvestri, more known for his numerous collaborations with Robert Zemeckis, will go forward to participate in the soundtrack of the series that contributes to his global success. The magic of the theme which I chose as this post, “Disaster Squad”, has an extraordinary melodic line performed by the brass section of the symphonic orchestra. This will fire our memories into action as if it were the highways of California by Jon Baker and Francis Poncherello, both heroes of the series…

Vous connaissez peut-être déjà I-f pour son tube de 1997, Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass, signé à l’époque sur Disko B. N’ayant pas gardé un très bon souvenir des gros labels et de leurs promesses, il a ensuite préféré conserver son indépendance en poursuivant son œuvre à travers une multitude de projets et de pseudos. Je vous présente aujourd’hui un mix qu’il a réalisé pour CBS, le programme fétiche d’Intergalactic FM, 45 minutes de bonheur mélodique qui viennent enrichir notre laboratoire auditif.

Perhaps you’re already familiar with I-f for their 1997 chart hit, ‘Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass’, signed on Disko B. After a lot of not so good memories of big labels and their promises, he then preferred to preserve his independence and pursued his work through a multitude of other projects. I present you a mix today which he realized for CBS, the superstar program from Intergalactic FM, 45 minutes of melodic happiness which comes to enrich our hearing laboratories.
